Shoot-out: Under Construction

If you visit St. Augustine anytime soon, you will likely be greeted by downtown construction around the Bridge of Lions.

During peak tourists holidays the traffic in any given direction can slow to a crawl, due to the ongoing construction project.
Barricades are even in many parking lots of local businesses.

Some of the barriers have not fared so well.
The temporary bridge is the only route across the river in the downtown area.
Here, you see the old bridge on the left, that will one day be the new bridge when the temporary bridge on the right, becomes the demolished bridge.
Barges clog the harbor and the inlet, at times.
The only way to describe it is, "A mess!"
The towering cranes, somehow, do not blend with the "old city" theme.
So, until the "under construction" is finished I avoid the congestion, when possible. As we cross the bridge we get the feeling of looking at the fort through prison fences.
Thanks for visiting. I am going to be out of town until Sunday, so I'll make my visits on your posts, then. Happy New Year to all of you. May you have a prosperous 2010.

  1. It's amazing to think that something probably quite spectacular is going to slowly emerge from that "mess". Love your cranes, I really do have a thing about cranes. Also love the battered barrier.
    Happy New Year!

  3. Gordon, what in the world, your site is making my music software skip a beat! How many pixels/inches is that banner photo, Ha!

My son I mentioned on another site would have loved these topic when he was three....we would stop at an intersection and he would hang on every construction movement and hence I had to learn to reconstruct old tattered and rusty tonka trucks for his amusement!

    Great post...

  7. Many prefer the natural beauty of Whooping Cranes to the construction types. From the mess, an aesthetically pleasing and useful bridge will emerge, like a butterfly from a cocoon. The photos you took describe the muddle and the inconvenience. Have a very restful and spiritually uplifting New Year, Gordon! We pray St. Augustine will be bridged soon.

With love, from Barry and Linda

  12. Love the dinged up barrier. Did you do that or was it done by one of the fish you caught while trying to get away?

That is the only bad thing about big cities. There is always construction going on. And by the time they have finished everything is obsolete, and they have to start over again.

We don't have to worry about that here. We like being obsolete. It is a way of life.

  13. I can see why you were inspired to suggest Under Construction as a topic, Gordon. You have a treasure trove there in St. Augustine. Thank you for the suggestion and for your great post.
